Oddcast

Published by Mark under General

I found this site; http://www.oddcast.com/home/  It is full of virtual characters you can use to personalise your website, by having your character make an introductory speech, for example, or even make your own scene.

It’s not cheap, but free to register an account, and quite funny to play around with

If you do chose a paid account, you can upload your own picture, record your own voice, and make yourself “come alive” on your own web page.

No, I’ve no financial interest in it myself, but thought I’d share it

Have fun.

Way to get Google listing

Published by Mark under Tips and Tricks

This is useful especially if you have a news related blog..Getting your blog listed as a news source on Google news.

First go to www.News.Google.com. Then scroll to the bottom of the page to about google news, click on it. Then Click Help for publishers>submit content>send us. Here you can fill out a form which submits your site to Google as a possible news source listing. Another tactic for this is to e-mail news-feedback@google.com. Or possibly even try both methods. Of course, your site must have relevent content for Google to include, but well worth a try do you think?

Naxos complete Barrios recordings

Published by Mark under Classical Guitar

Agustin Barrios

The guitar compositions of Agustin Barrios Mangore must be the most coveted of all classical guitarist composers. Following the composers death in San Salvador his music died with him, because there was only 10 pieces he ever bothered to publish. In answer to a question why did he not publish his works for guitar, Barrios is said to have replied something akin to; “What’s the point, hardly anyone else can play my music”. This, at that time, was true. One who certainly did have the technique was Andres Segovia, and the subject of Segovia’s antipathy for Barrios  is a complex issue which I will leave to a later post.

Barrios had the roots of his music steeped in Folklore, and indeed was quoted as saying; “One cannot be a guitarist if he has not bathed in the fountain of culture”. Though he did in fact compose in many styles, Baroque, Classical, Dance, many of his pieces were based upon the local, exotic rythyms, yet often tinged with lament. As in, happy, then sad emotions. Many times his works were autobiographical, detailed from his colourful life as a travelling musician.

Barrios was the first ever guitarist to make records, dating from around 1908, and it was from these that, for many years, were the only record of his works. In late ’70’s Robert Tucker contacted guitarist John Williams, with a view of interesting him to transcribe some Barrios music, and possibly record them. After 2 years, Williams agreed, and John Williams plays Barrios, 1977, was the first all Barrios record, the spontaneous beauty of the music leading to many other guitar recordings to follow. Now there have been many volumes of music published of this formerly forgotten genius of the guitar. Naxos music have had in progress the complete works of Barrios on CD, a project which entails different players recording the many volumes. So far, we are up to volume 3. It is this series which I would like to highlight here.

Volume 1 played by Antigoni Goni (Greece)

This is my personal favourite volume, or for that matter, one of my all time favourite CD’s. Goni is, on the whole, a slower than average player. She gives detailed study to every single phrase she plays,  with rich tonal sonorities. The CD opens with the sprightly Maxixe (pronounced Mash-e-shay) followed by the serene, virtuose tremolo “Sueno En La Floresta”, Goni’s technique proves more than adequate, but it is the intensity of the interpretations which stand this CD out from it’s peers.

Track listing can be found here; Barrios Volume 1

If I had to single one track out it would be Vidalita. This innocent theme and variations, draws so much heartfelt emotion from the guitar it is profoundly moving, with superbly judged tonal contrasts. Other “lesser” known pieces such as Humouresque  and Pepita come across as beautiful, haunting compostions, almost like composer, artist, instrument in perfect harmoney.

Highly recommended, for those who missed it. For anyone who has the CD, I recommend putting it on right now! It’s one way to truly appreciate the life we lead.

Volume 2. Played by Enno Voorhorst.

Track listing here

Belgian guitarist Voorhorst takes up the project in volume 2, and he takes on Barrios longer works, although generally speaking, Barrios did not write many “long” pieces. Tremolo works “Cancion Del Hilandera (song of the thread spinner) and “The Last Song” (Una limonsna por el amor de Dios) and “Contemplation” are all given a fluent, impassioned reading. “El Sueno en la Mannequita” is the sleep of the little doll, inspired by the innocence of a young girl. The three movement “Cathederal” is Barrios arguably most important work, the prelude added later, as a Saudade (yearning) composed in Cuba during difficult period of his life.

Many of Barrios most deeply romantic works are here,  Invocation a mi Madre, Oracion, and Confession. The recital ends with Variations on Lagrima by Tarrega, possibly Barrios most complex work technically. Another superb, highly recommended recording. Interestingly, the link I gave above lists two “extra tracks”..This is a mystery to me, if you know what they are please let me know!

Volume 3 played by Jeffrey McFadden (Canada)

Track listing here.

McFadden takes up the reins with another impressive performence here. Although, this disc certainly is not Barrios at his best as a composer, I would admit. I’ve always been intrigued by Barrios “lesser” know pieces. Many compositions have been played time and again, yet there are some relatively fresh material, charming and evocative, which deserve to be heard. Example is the opening track, “Cazaapa”, which is fast becoming popular. The tango “Don Perez Freire” an example of a highly infectious main theme. If I have one minor quibble of Barrios music, it is often the quality of his trio, or middle sections, or third subject. This tango is classic example. A very catchy main these, good second subject, but then a patched up offering in the middle, devoid of inspiration, seemingly to “make up” the piece into a whole. The second offering in this genre “Tango no.2″ is in the same vein I feel. This type of flaw affected a number of early works, in my view. Though in later years, the composer showed more artistic maturity.

“Tua Imagem” (your image) is a charming waltz, “Pais de Abanico” (country of the fan) was inspired by the picture on a porcelain hand fan! “Medallon Antiguo” (the old medallion) was said to be worn by a singer whom Barrios was in love with at the time.

These pieces aside though, the rest of the disc contains very small studies, (though missing Las Asbejas and study in A, far and away Barrios best) a couple of little spirited dances, virtuoso Tarantella to conclude. Perhaps, on their own, comparitively thin material.

The playing is excellent, McFadden phrases beautufully in Don Perez Freire and Medallon Antiguo, but I only recommend this disc to Barrios affectionado’s. Of which there are many, in order to complete their collection. The works here though, do not represent Barrios at his best. I find it hard to believe so far, these  collections do not include pieces such as “Choro Da Saudade” or “Vals no. 3″. I can only speculate who the guitarist will be for volume 4, which is long overdue!

Holiday Thoughts

Published by Mark under Commercials

Here in UK as the nights draw in, some people find this time of the year a good one for planning a holiday, so here are some options, with related links.

Hotels in Spain

A good place to start is www.discoverspain.com. Visiting Spain is not only about sun, great cuisine, and a warm welcome, but also its rich monumental heritage and natural environment.

If you enjoy places of historic interest, an interesting one I found is Torre de Bujaco, Muralla de Avila. This is a castle, which overlooks the city of Avila.

Muralla de Avila.

The old castle and the church located outside are patrimoney of the Humanity. The construction of the castle, by Raimundo from Burgandy, dates from the end of the X1 Century with King Alfonso V1 of Castile, who ordered him to repopulate, and to fortify the cities of Segovia

Hotels in Barcelona

Further north, there is also La Sagrada Família (Catalan, ‘The Holy Family’) This is a is a massive Roman Catholic Basilica under construction in Barcelona.

Sagrada by night

Construction began as far back as 1882, and for 40 years, Antoni Gaudi worked on it, devoting the last 15 years of his life entirely to this endeavour. With regard to the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have joked, “My client is not in a hurry.” In the years following his his death in 1926 parts of the unfinished building and Gaudí’s models and workshop were destroyed during the war by Catalan anarchists. The design, as now being constructed, is based both on reconstructed versions of the lost plans and on modern adaptations.

From Sagrada Famila, if you take metro to Vallcarca, we find Parc Guell. Parc Guell

In here is an old Cathederal in the Gothic quarter, well worth a visit from what I understand from those who have visited. The Cathederal has it’s own Geese.

Hotels in Madrid

Now onto the Spanish capital, Madrid. A great tourist attraction is Prado museum and botanical gardens. This contains one of the worlds most important art collections, including works by Artists Goya, Rubens and Murillo. Here is a statue between the Prado museum and Botanical Gardens.

Another great attraction is The Royal Palace Madrid. This has a guided tour, taking around 45 minutes. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Madrid. Here is the official website; Palace website.

Something to think about, on these long Autumn evenings perhaps!

Hits, Views and Visits

Published by Mark under General

Being relatively new to web hosting, I’ve been wondering the exact difference between hits, and views ect. Here is an explanation I’ve found;

Hits:

A hit is an individual pageview. A single action on the Web server as it appears in the log file. If a page is refreshed, the server gets hit again but the vistor/user session doesn’t change. The number of hits are the number of times the server is asked for information. A visitor downloading a single file is logged as a single hit, while a visitor requesting a Web page including two images registers as three hits on the server; one hit is the request for the .html page, and two additional hits are requests for the downloaded image files. While the volume of hits is an indicator of Web server traffic, it is not an accurate reflection of how many pages are being looked at.
Page Views:
Views is the number of hits that actually resulted in something being sent back to the user, such as an HTML page or image. Hits to files designated as pages. Supporting graphics and other non-page files are not counted. Page views will give you a more accurate count of how many times pages within your site are requested. Visits and unique visitors in particular will give you an estimate of how many people are coming to your site.

Visits:
Number of times a visitor came to your site. A visitor is defined as one machine making requests for pages and there is at least one hit every 30 minutes. A visit is defined as a hit orgininating from the same IP-address with a maximum time between two hits of 20 minutes. The visitor/user session only changes if the page is left and is accessed again later. If the visitor continues to browse your site after they reach the idle-time limit, a new visit is counted. The default idle-time limit is thirty minutes.

That’s my beginners lesson for today!

Credit slump?

Published by Mark under General

Talk yet again of a possible slump in the credit market. Leading to a “housing market correction.” And guess who hopes to sell up next year…

It’s odd how some people are always on the wrong end of the economic cycle. You know the sort of thing…You want to borrow money, interest rates soar. Another time you sold out, went into cash, and saving rates plummeted. Selling your house? Bad time for the market ect ect.

Other end of the scale, another person is always on the right end. It often seems the case that if you start off on the worng end of the scale, you seem to remain that way for many years, maybe even the whole time! Yet, who governs the timing of these things I wonder? As the saying goes, are we the servants or the masters of our fate.

Enough introspection. Time to get back to the guitar. Next entry I hope to start a CD review series. First off will be the Naxos complete works of Barrios, which is an ongoing series, still in progress. We have now reached volume 3.  :)

Back to school

Published by Mark under General

After all these years, off I go to a design course, in the local school. I’m still reeling from the sock of seeing a very old school report, which stated, “Mark is apprehensive when confronted with new ideas. But with encouragement, tunes in quickly and works hard”. The shock came with the realisation that the comment is still true today, 40 years later!

I am thinking also about an IT course later. I will write up some of the information I pick up on here. The tool we are using in the course is FrontPage. However, it appears there are some worrying conflicts with Frontpage and Yahoo web hosting. Yahoo say they do not recommend using FTP programmes in conjunction with sites built using Frontpage, because there is a risk of damaging the server extensions. And guess who uses Yahoo web hosting :???:

I’ve also been tyring Yahoo site builder. This is easy to use, but it seems not possible to add templates later, you have to start with those, or blank page. Blank page is fine for the skilled web designer, but for novices wanting to add some predesigned glamour might want to download and add templates. And later on find out of course that these are lousy with search engines! So at present, I’m torn between the two.

I also have to get hosting for Markantony.net, the domain which I want to use to try to establish myself as a guitarist again. I will go for domain forwarding, to maybe one of the free web hosting services for now.

Introducing…My Duet Partner

Published by Mark under General

It’s way past time I introduced my duet partner..All the way from Mexico City, Ms Eloisa Lafuente. We met a few years ago on the internet, and we began making on line collaborations with our guitars. Strange how even professional musicians are totally baffled how we can play guitar duets on opposite sides of the world. The reality is, it’s easy. But it’s much easier if you have someone who it totally tuned in to your way of thinking, feeling. That, from the beginning, has been the foundation of our collaboration. And friendship.

Eloisa is a lady of many talents, and I interviewed her for my music site http://digital-newworld.com/music/Artists.html and in the pages section of my blog here. Also, I put up some files of the quartet she plays in, “The Fool on the Hill”, an Arabic dance and a piece by Vivaldi. I also added the interview in the pages section of this blog.

Baden Powell article added.

Published by Mark under Classical Guitar

I added an page  article on Brazillian guitarist composer Roberto Baden Powell. I’ve always loved the colourful idoiom of Latin American music, and Baden Powell used contrasting laments to express his emotions. A highly skillful and talented composer who I feel deserves study.

This is a series I am introducing to celebrate the guitar composers, who helped to shape the reportoire. Also the artists who make significant contributions.

Later I will be adding emerging talents of different genre, to publisise their works.

Wordpress updates

Published by Mark under General

Wordpress are “thrilled” to announce their latest offering, version 2.3…

I have discovered individual themes make a difference in your options. For example, certain themes  never add more than two links, or will not allow only post summaries to be displayed. Why does this happen

Here is a useful plug  in for wordpress. It is an all in one Search Engine Optimisation pack for your wordpress blog. Download it, upload to your server, activate it, and then edit the options you want. It enables you to select meta tabs for entries, formats page titles, categories, auto generates description, and more. Here is a link to the site to download from; http://wp.uberdose.com/2007/03/24/all-in-one-seo-pack/
