Is the Internet heading for burnout?
I’ve noted that, even with broadband of 4MB, many sites are slowing down to a crawl. Deloitte Consulting thinks that this year the interent is close to it’s capacity, and bottlenecks are likely to increase in the terabite-capable pipes exchanging traffic between continents. Have you tried to access youtube in the evenings, and had a seemingly interminable wait for pages to display? It only takes upsurge in video usage to turn an inconvenience caused by a drop in access speeds into full-scale user dissatisfaction.
Apparently, illegal video downloads contribute to over one third of internet traffic. Then add to that the legit downloads and user generated content. Little wonder why I find myself only able to access youtube in the am, before, for example, the kids come home from school in the neighbourhood and start downloading MP3’s, pictures and video.
Google though, are taking a benign view; “Many people have argued there’s an Internet bandwidth shortage, but it’s really a last-mile issue,” said Google CEO Eric Schmidt, adding that there is so much fibre underground.
There is a problem though because of a general reluctence to invest at goverment level in the internet infrastructure because no one owns it. Many people think long term the issue will correct itself. But short term, frustrations may well be on the increase.
